GFCF Diet???

Who knew that there were other bloggers out there that are living with autism? I sure didn't. However, this week I happened to run across some. I am finding out so much information that I think my brain is about to explode! I am really finding strength in reading other people's advice and how far they have come.

Today I am researching the GFCF diet and how it can really work for some kids. The trouble is, I am a very inconsistent person (ADHD) and I just don't know how I can keep it up. I so want to do this for Riley, but I have many questions! He is such a picky eater that I will bet he will hold out for as long as I can. He is already off milk and milk products because they gross him out. So, I would be making him give up wheat and all the things he loves! What about his Juicy Juice that he can't live without? What do I give him then? Are McDonalds fries safe? I heard they were...then they weren't. Where do I find these answers?

I need some feedback from all you pro's out there! Who knows something???

Hi Traci :o)

Gabe isn't on a GFCF diet, but he is very allergic to wheat. Mamaroo at Mother's Intuition would be a great resource for the diet. Her son Roo was on it for a while. As for French fries, Gabe's favorite, we found that Burger King is one of the only places that has fries that are Gluten free. If you google search Fast Food Ingredients you come up with some sights that you can go to that will list everything you need to know about the food they serve. Sadly, they also list the calories too. lol
Good luck! It takes some changes and sacrifices, but in the long run, if it benefits your child it is worth it.

Hi Traci- We did the GFCf diet for our son for about 15months. A great book for you to try would be
"Special Diets for Special Kids" by Lisa Lewis. It details the diet and also has recipes. You can pick up the book for around 19 dollars at Amazon.com I also found items that were GFCF in the organic section of my local grocery store.
Good Luck to you!

I, too, am amazed at how many super parents there are out there who find the time to blog AND care for their special kids.
My son has been on a CF diet since December, and the only reason I was willing to do it is because I had an allergy/immunology specialist test him to see if he was allergic to any foods first. He was positive for milk and soy. The test is inexpensive and well worth it. If your child is not allergic to casein or gluten, don't go there. You will be compromising his overall health by sacrificing the nutrition that his body needs. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE - have him tested for food allergies first.
My son drinks Rice Dream instead of milk, and I make ghee (clarified butter) instead of using butter or vegetable oil spreads. Just about anything you make with milk can be made with Rice Dream - except whipped cream, lol! Ghee is an excellent substitute for butter in cooking and baking, except that it is 100% saturated fat.
Good luck!
